Romanian Senator Titus Corlățean, Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Romanian Senate, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Minister of Justice, has issued a strong public statement regarding the case of the Samson family, a Romanian family in Sweden that has been fighting for more than three years to be reunited with their daughters.
In an extensive declaration, the Romanian senator accuses Swedish authorities of serious abuses, violations of parental rights, and disregard for requests made by the Romanian state, demanding clear explanations regarding the situation of Romanian children currently in the custody of Swedish social services.
“The Drama of the Romanian Samson Family in Sweden”
For the authorities of the democratic state of Sweden, I have several questions:
1. Do you feel comfortable when you look at this image?
2. Are you aware of the 5–6 suicide attempts, made out of despair, by one of Daniel and Bianca’s daughters? And all the other abuses?
Both I and other Romanian officials have informed you in detail. Why do you do nothing? Why do you tolerate, cover up, and ultimately sponsor these inhumane abuses committed by employees of the Swedish “social services”? What is the real level of Swedish democracy if no criminal investigation is initiated to investigate these abuses?
3. You have made no effort whatsoever to support the gradual reintegration of the children into their natural family.
Why are you violating the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which establishes this obligation as a priority? Because you know that the parents were not abusive and are good parents.
4. Why do you treat with contempt the efforts made by Romanian authorities (Parliament and Government) over the last three years and merely pretend to cooperate?
Why is there no reciprocity in Sweden’s relationship with Romania, a country to which you owe important gestures (and to me personally) for helping unblock and accelerate your accession to NATO?
5. Why are you violating international law and retaining our citizens against the wishes of their country of citizenship, Romania?
Sara and Tiana are Romanian citizens—EXCLUSIVELY ROMANIAN citizens. They do NOT have Swedish citizenship! You have rejected all of Romania’s repeated requests for the repatriation of its own citizens. Why?
6. You know the ugly things that happen in psychiatric-medical detention centers for children.
Children learn to smoke from the age of 10, run away at night, and end up using drugs supplied by dealers in exchange for money or sex. Why do you do nothing? Why do you not conduct criminal investigations into these matters? Why do you cover them up?
7. Why have you cut off all contact and visitation rights between the parents and their daughters?
Why are you violating international law?
8. Why did you place Sara in a psychiatric medical clinic under LVU Level 3, meaning isolation in a psychiatric ward and the administration of tranquilizers, in order to turn her into an inert “vegetable”?
Do the desperate cries of this girl bother you—the cries she has made for more than three years, constantly asking to be returned to her parents and repatriated to Romania? Do you know that this girl, not yet 14 years old, under the influence of these medications and under severe stress, has reached a weight of more than 120 kilograms (264 pounds)? Do you know about Tiana’s ordeal—being moved repeatedly between many foster families, while clearly refusing to be forcibly integrated? Do you know how the foster “father” unexpectedly enters the girl’s room at night while she is undressing? I know that you know!
9. Why did you decide to change the girls’ identities, change their names, and erase their Romanian roots?
So that you can easily put them up for adoption? These are children who are citizens of Romania—not yours! Why are you violating international law and the Romanian Constitution?
10. Why did you accuse the parents of “forcing” their daughters to go to church?
And to read the Bible? And why do you accuse them of thereby “preventing the free development of the human personality”? Do you realize that this is a classic case of violating religious freedom? A violation of the fundamental right of PARENTS to educate their own children? Why, during the investigation three and a half years ago, did 80% of the questions addressed to the parents concern their views on LGBTQ issues? What did LGBTQ have to do with this case? Were you bothered by the CHRISTIAN identity of this Romanian family in your extremely secularized state? Do you know that Romanians are like that—they go to church? And that the overwhelming majority have preserved their Christian identity? Whether Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, or Evangelical? And that you should respect that identity?
11. Why are you sinking so low as to instruct the Swedish prosecutor to start a criminal investigation against the parents now?
Three and a half years after you took their children? And after, within just a few weeks at the beginning of 2023, you yourselves abandoned the original allegations of parental abuse because you realized they were not true? Why are you trying to intimidate the parents now? You know that this entire story actually began because of aggressive treatment and bullying at school by Swedish classmates aged 10–11 toward their fellow student because she was a foreigner, a Romanian girl, well-behaved unlike them, and also a Christian. They spat on her, pulled her hair, and beat her. And although the father informed school officials, they did nothing. Does the harsh truth becoming public bother you? Does it bother you that the parents are no longer silent? Let me tell you something—we will no longer remain silent either. And the truth may hurt you very much.
12. What do you intend to do at the May 21 court hearing? Completely terminate parental rights? Arrest the parents?
Have you forgotten that Sweden has already received multiple condemnations from the European Court of Human Rights in cases of this type? What you do not know, because you do not have God, is that there is a Judge above every human will, and He never abandons His children. Nor do you know how great a sin it is to harm those who trust in Him. You will learn this, I assure you.
And for those in Romania, I have only one message—applicable both to public officials and ordinary people:
It is time to leave your comfort zone and do whatever you can to help this Romanian family. To begin with, many others and I will be in Suceava on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m., on the Esplanade in front of the House of Culture, for a demonstration of solidarity and support for the reunification of the Samson family. Those of you who can attend, please come. And this is where it will all begin. Just as Romanian Christians did eleven years ago, throughout the world, for the reunification of the Bodnariu family in Norway.
And, with God’s help, they succeeded.
The same will happen now. – concluded Senator Titus Corlățean.
