CHICAGO, IL — AbbVie and the PGA TOUR have officially joined forces in a major multi-year partnership, naming the North Chicago-based pharmaceutical giant the Official Pharmaceutical Sponsor of the PGA TOUR and the 2026 Presidents Cup.

The centerpiece of this collaboration is the newly launched “Birdies for Brain Health” campaign. This purpose-driven initiative transforms tournament performance into tangible advocacy, turning on-course birdies into critical awareness and funding for neurological disorders and mental health conditions.

The partnership officially teed off in dramatic fashion at the Medinah Country Club, which is currently hosting the 2026 Presidents Cup. Key leaders gathered for a special launch ceremony directly on the Hole 15 green Fan Bleacher, celebrating the intersection of elite sports and global healthcare advocacy.

During the event, Jason Smith, Senior VP of Neuroscience at AbbVie, emphasized the clinical and human importance of the campaign. Pointing out that neurological conditions impact more than one in three people globally, Smith highlighted how the campaign will directly support patients and their care partners.

Standing alongside him, Joie Chitwood, Executive Director of the Presidents Cup, welcomed the collaborative energy. Chitwood expressed great pride in hosting the debut of such a significant platform at Medinah, noting that the campaign adds a profound layer of purpose to the fan experience and the tournament’s overall legacy.

The alliance carries significant financial and strategic implications for professional golf:

Direct Charitable Backing: To mark the launch, AbbVie kickstarted the campaign with an immediate $330,000 donation split among six major patient advocacy organizations, including The Michael J. Fox Foundation and Mental Health America.

Long-Term Financial Scale: Moving into 2027, the financial impact will scale dramatically as the campaign expands across the PGA TOUR calendar, specifically integrating into high-profile Signature Events and the FedExCup Playoffs.

Complete Category Exclusivity: As part of the multi-year deal, AbbVie secures exclusive marketing rights within the pharmaceutical category. This prevents any industry competitors from activating or advertising across the PGA TOUR’s premier platforms, locking in unprecedented brand visibility for AbbVie’s neurology portfolio.

The massive scale of the AbbVie alliance highlights the intensity of the quest to secure elite professional golf tournaments for the Chicago area. Chicago boasts an incredibly passionate fan base, historic venues, and a robust infrastructure. Yet, despite these clear regional strengths, the city has recently faced a glaring problem: a complete lack of a consistent annual PGA TOUR stop.

Before the 2026 Presidents Cup arrived at Medinah Country Club, the last official PGA TOUR stop in the Chicago area was the 2023 BMW Championship, held at Olympia Fields Country Club. Viktor Hovland claimed victory at that event, which the PGA TOUR recognized as its Event of the Year. Since then, the BMW Championship has traveled to other midwestern and national markets. This leaves local golf enthusiasts wondering why more annual tournaments do not consistently return to the region, especially considering the astronomical rewards available to the clubs that host them.

While neither the PGA of America, Ryder Cup Europe, nor the PGA TOUR publicly release the exact check amounts paid to host venues, host golf clubs receive a combination of direct compensation, massive infrastructure upgrades, long-term commercial upside, and elite global prestige:

Direct Financial Compensation & Rental Fees: Host venues are paid substantial course rental fee (often running into millions of dollars) to effectively shut down the facilities for weeks or months. Organizing bodies also provide loss-of-play compensation to cover lost membership play, greens fees, and food/beverage revenue, while clubs retain a highly lucrative percentage of onsite merchandise and pro shop sales.

Multi-Million-Dollar Course & Infrastructure Upgrades: Organizing bodies invest millions into the host facility, leaving behind permanent renovations and world-class tour-standard agronomy at little to no cost to the club. Host sites are also left with permanent utilities—including upgraded subterranean fiber-optic networks and heavy-duty electrical grids—alongside expanded practice facilities and refurbished clubhouses.

Long-Term Financial & Membership Upside: For private clubs, hosting an international match-play event elevates the venue to iconic status, causing equity membership initiation fees to routinely skyrocket and waitlists to stretch for years. For public or resort venues, public greens fees and stay-and-play package rates increase significantly as golfers seek out “bucket list” courses.

Global Prestige & Marketing Exposure: Unlike standard events, the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup generate unrivaled media reach, broadcasting to over 180 countries and hundreds of millions of households. This cements a historical legacy that permanently shifts a club’s brand from a great regional course to a historic international venue, guaranteeing future considerations for Majors.

Because the structural and financial rewards of hosting are so life-changing for a club, the competition to land these events is fierce. However, golf’s governing bodies cannot bring a tournament to a city on prestige alone; the modern tour model demands massive capital. This is exactly where corporate backing and title sponsorships act as the ultimate decision-swingers.

Major corporations hold the power to swing tournament locations by funding elevated purses under the PGA TOUR’s current structure, driving massive charitable fundraising impact, and securing long-term commitments.

When heavy-hitting hometown corporations commit their marketing dollars to the Windy City—exemplified by AbbVie’s multi-year backing of the Presidents Cup—it proves to the PGA TOUR that Chicago is a financially thriving, premier destination capable of sustaining golf’s biggest stages. Ultimately, it is this exact type of corporate synergy that unlocks the massive upgrades and global prestige that elite venues crave, serving as the necessary bridge to bring world-class golf back to Chicago.
