Advocates for a Romanian Christian couple whose daughters were removed by Swedish authorities on alleged “religious extremism” grounds have taken their custody fight to Washington, more than three years into the separation.

Supporters from the Romanian American community rallied Friday morning outside Sweden’s embassy in Washington to back Daniel and Bianca Samson. The Samsons have been separated from their girls, Sara and Tiana, since December 2022.

Advocates say the dispute traces back to a false abuse claim Sara, then 11, made after an argument about being denied makeup and a smartphone. She soon admitted it wasn’t true, but child welfare officials still removed both sisters from the household.

Prosecutors found no evidence of abuse. Authorities still refused to return the girls, pointing to the family’s habit of going to church three times a week and its media choices as proof of what they called religious extremism.
